Zooplankton organisms (mostly small millimeter to centimeter-sized animals) play a major role in marine biogeochemical cycles as they feed on even smaller algae and bacteria and themselves represent food for higher trophic levels like fish. In order to regularly sample zooplankton at the Cape Verde Ocean Observatory, a new HYDRO-BIOS® Multinet (Type Midi, mesh-size of 200 µm) was installed on RV Islândia and successfully deployed for the first time at CVOO during the most recent monthly site occupation (ISL_00512,  15/16. August 2012). It will be implemented in the regular CVOO sampling scheme for the next three years and is provided by the subproject B8 “The role of zooplankton in N-, P- and C- cycling and for the oxygen budget of tropical OMZs” of the DFG-funded collaborative research center 754 “Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean”. The net allows to sample different water depths during one deployment and therefore will allow for a better understanding of zooplankton abundance and biomass at different depths at the CVOO site. Target depth for regular deployments at CVOO will be 800 to 500 m, 500 to 300 m, 300 to 200 m, 200 to 100 m and 100 to 0 m. An attached optical particle counter will also allow obtaining particle-size spectra for the water column.
